Description
If you want an antique chest of drawers with a stand-up personality, this late 1800s chest is a doozie.
It has all the attributes of that time period -i.e.,
— rich veneer over frame’s raised /rounded bars and drawers,
—2 small drawers over full-size four with bottom – cedar-lined,
— front lion paws,
— wooden wheels,
— brass key holes
— locking skeleton key and more
Sadly, the chest top had water damage. Half of the top veneer was lost. The underlying tongue and groove wooden boards were warped. For weeks, a series of vices were used to achieve more leveled surface.
Here’s what I mean by unique personality … in order to cover the wooden boards, a flexible leather was coupled with the aged veneer. This uniting of disparate, but compatible materials is typical of Stoked Style’s practical artistry in showcasing castaway furniture. It’s our artfull personality coming through … hopefully it matches your’s.
In addition, the chest of drawers represents one more furniture piece, saved from the landfill. Your purchase of Stoked Style rescued furniture, means we share an environ mission to decrease discarded furniture which averages 45% ofnational landfill contents. Your environ interest with a singular personality is a match for our artful answers to castaway furniture. Thank you!
PS – Why are today’s bedroom dressers sometimes called chests of drawers?
Compact wartime chests were originally crafted for England’s General Wellington, where the concept of drawers originated. The chest contained shallow drawers installed on top of each other. They also locked to secure battle plans, letters, coins, etc.
The Wellington Chest eventually grew into furniture with drawers that could be locked. The chest of drawers allowed families to leave home, knowing their prized possessions were locked away, safe from curious servants.
In addition, itinerant students/workers often stayed in boarding houses. Such travelers often brought their own chests of drawers, whose lock and key capabilities kept possessions safe from other house dwellers and their visitors. Enjoy this piece’s stories.See

On the other side, the exposed tongue and groove boards were affected with buckling. After 7 weeks in the vice, they flattened to 90%.The veneer received no shine polyurethane protection to reflect the permanently installed antiqued leather on the shared top.
