Description

Chinese Chess Set with Immortals & Campaign Lacquered Board

Circa 1960s

This exquisite Chinese chess set with immortals and a campaign lacquered board is a striking combination of craftsmanship, history, and functional artistry. Dating back to the 1960s, this vintage folding chess and backgammon game board is intricately hand-carved, featuring a wooden frame and inlaid lacquered tile squares. When fully opened, the board measures 20 inches by 19 inches by 3 inches high, while in its folded form, with the chess pieces neatly stored in built-in pull-out drawers, it measures 9.5 inches deep by 19 inches wide by 10 inches high.

The chessboard itself is a masterwork, with its black and white squares forming a striking contrast. The white squares are adorned with hand-painted Chinese artwork, featuring intricate landscapes, historical figures, and calligraphy, reflecting themes from classic Chinese literature, folklore, and mythology. Surrounding the board is a beautifully hand-carved wooden frame, decorated with elaborate dragon and floral motifs, which further enhance its collectible appeal. The brass hardware, hinges, and corner accents suggest a high level of craftsmanship, hinting at mid-to-late 20th-century Chinese artistry.

The chess pieces are equally remarkable, made from polychromed resin, and are divided into two contrasting colors—dark green/black and pale green/jade-like—which represent the opposing armies. Unlike standard Western chess pieces, this set features Chinese-inspired figures, bringing a unique cultural touch to the game. The king and queen pieces resemble ancient Chinese sages or emperors, while the knights are represented by mounted warriors, and the rooks take the form of traditional pagoda-style towers, symbolizing fortresses in Chinese culture. The intricate detailing, facial expressions, and symbolic elements suggest that these pieces were carefully designed, possibly inspired by Chinese mythology, history, or the Three Kingdoms era.

Each chess piece is meticulously sized for balance and aesthetic appeal:

Kings measure 4 inches high x 1.25 inches in diameter.

Queens are 3.75 inches high x 1.25 inches in diameter.

Knights are 2.75 inches high x 1.25 inches in diameter.

Bishops are 3 inches high x 1 inch in diameter

Pawns measure 3 inches high x 1 inch in diameter

The folding design makes it both portable and practical, ideal for display or gameplay. The pull-out drawers provide a dedicated space for the chess pieces, ensuring they remain organized and protected when not in use. This unique Chinese chess set is perfect for collectors, chess enthusiasts, or those who appreciate fine Asian craftsmanship and historical themes. Whether displayed as an artistic conversation piece or used for competitive play, this set is a stunning example of functional art and heritage.

With its superb craftsmanship, historical significance, and rare design, this Chinese-themed chess set with immortals is a must-have for enthusiasts of Asian culture, fine chess sets, and vintage game boards.See
